THOMAS SWIFT (169_–1770), son of WILLIAM SWIFT and ELIZABETH UNKNOWN

THANKFUL MOREY (b. 1696), daughter of JONATHAN MOREY and HANNAH BOURNE


Thomas, the son of William and Elizabeth Swift, was born in December 169_ in Sandwich.1 He may be the Thomas Swift who died on 24 December 1770, age 78, in Rochester.2 Thomas Swift of Sandwich married Thankful Morey of Plymouth on 23 January 1717/8 in Sandwich or Plymouth.1,3

Thankful, the daughter of Jonathan, Jr. and Hannah Morey, was born "the last week in March" 1695/6 in Plymouth.3

i. Lydia Swift was born on 20 August 1718. She was baptized on 27 July 1724 in Sandwich.1 She died on 30 April 1807, age 88, in Sandwich.1 Mrs. Lydia Swift of Sandwich married Mr. Job Bourne of Sandwich on 19 January 1737/8 in Plymouth.3 Job, the son of Eleazer and Abigail Bourne, was born on "the last day of March" 1717 in Sandwich.1 He died on 29 June 1790, age 73, in Sandwich.1

ii. Deborah Swift was born on 1 or 2 September 1720. She married Jonathan Tobey.

iii. Elizabeth Swift was born on 28 May 1723. She was baptized on 26 July 1724 in Sandwich.1 She might be the Elizabeth of Sandwich who married Jehoshaphat Eldridge, Jr. of Falmouth on 17 December 1747 in Sandwich.1

iv. Thomas Swift was born on 11 January 1724/5. He was baptized on 20 June 1725 in Sandwich.1 He died on 17 April 1795, age 69, in Rochester.2Thomas Swift, Jr. of Plymouth married Rebecca Clark of Plymouth on 21 October 1746 in Plymouth.3

On 18 January 1750 Thomas Swift, yeoman of Plymouth, deeded to his son Thomas Swift of Rochester all of his land in Rochester.4

Thomas Swift, yeoman of Rochester, made his will on 4 December 1793. He named his wife Rebecca and his children.5

v. Jerusha Swift was born on 11 May 1727. Jerusha Swift of Plymouth married Jonathan Morey of Plymouth on 21 September 1750 in Plymouth.3

vi. Phineas Swift was born on 25 February 1731/2. He was baptized on 27 August 1732.4

On 28 December 1757 Thomas Swift sold to his son Phineas Swift of Plymouth the land where Phineas lived.4

vii. Rhoda Swift was born on 10 March 1733/4.

viii. Thankful Swift (twin) was born on 26 February 1737/8. She died on 26 May 1754 in Plymouth.3

ix. Lemuel Swift (twin) was born on 26 February 1737/8. He is buried in the Old Garfield Burial Ground near Potsdam, New York.6 He married Rebecca Whitfield of Rochester on 8 December 1756.6

On 9 October 1759 Thomas Swift sold to his son Lemuel Swift, yeoman of Plymouth, several parcels of land lying in Plymouth and Sandwich.4

Lemuel was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He served in Captain Nye's company in the Fourth Plymouth county regiment in the defense of the Elizabeth Islands in 1776 and he was a corporal in the Rhode Island campaign in 1780.6 At the end of the war, he moved to New Hampshire and then to Barnard Vermont.6 He went to New York in 1804.6
